That is an enormous bet — GBP 152 on a GBP 2,000 bankroll — and it assumes your 56% estimate is perfectly calibrated.

I use fractional Kelly — specifically, quarter-Kelly — which divides the recommended stake by four. The same prop now gets 1.9% of bankroll, or roughly GBP 38. That aligns neatly with my 1-2 unit framework and produces much smoother bankroll growth. Fractional Kelly sacrifices some theoretical growth rate in exchange for dramatically lower variance and a much smaller probability of significant drawdown. Over nine years of NBA prop betting, I have found quarter-Kelly to be the optimal balance between growth and survival for someone who is confident in their model but honest about its imperfections.

The limitation of Kelly in practice is the input: your estimated probability. If your estimate is wrong by even a few percentage points, full Kelly can recommend stakes that are ruinously large. Quarter-Kelly buffers that estimation error, but it does not eliminate it. I always cross-check my Kelly output against my flat-staking rules: if Kelly recommends more than 2 units, I cap at 2 regardless. Discipline beats optimality when the inputs are uncertain.

Stop-Loss and Session Limits for NBA Betting

The reason is not superstition — it is that big winning nights often correlate with unusual market conditions (a slate of injuries, a wave of mispriced lines) that are unlikely to persist into the final games of the evening. Reducing volume at the tail end of a winning session preserves the gains and avoids the common pattern of giving back profit on lower-conviction late bets.

Stop-losses are not a sign of weak conviction. They are a sign that you understand the difference between a single session and a long-term project. My NBA betting career spans nine years.
